Abstract

Employee engagement has become an important concern for contemporary organizations because engaged employees can contribute to organizational commitment, discretionary effort, knowledge sharing, and service quality. Leadership is one of the organizational factors frequently associated with employee attitudes and behaviours. This conceptual paper examines the relationship between transformational leadership and employee engagement. Transformational leadership emphasizes vision, inspiration, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and the development of employees. The paper proposes that transformational leaders can contribute to employee engagement by strengthening meaningfulness, autonomy, psychological connection, trust, and opportunities for development. The study draws upon transformational leadership theory and the Job Demands–Resources perspective to develop a conceptual framework. It argues that leadership behaviours may function as organizational resources that help employees deal with workplace demands. The paper further identifies organizational trust, psychological empowerment, perceived organizational support, and meaningful work as potential mediating mechanisms. The paper concludes with implications for managers and recommendations for future empirical research.
