Abstract

Innovation is an important organizational capability in environments characterized by technological development, changing customer preferences, and competitive pressure. While organizations often invest in technology and research and development to stimulate innovation, organizational culture can influence whether employees are willing and able to generate, share, and implement new ideas. This conceptual paper examines the role of organizational culture in supporting innovation and competitive advantage. Drawing upon organizational culture and knowledge-based perspectives, the paper proposes that cultures characterized by learning, psychological safety, collaboration, experimentation, and tolerance for constructive failure can facilitate innovation. The paper also considers leadership and knowledge sharing as important mechanisms. The analysis suggests that culture does not directly guarantee competitive advantage but can contribute to innovation capability, which may subsequently influence organizational performance.
